What happens at your first chiropractic appointment?
Your first appointment covers four things: a conversation about what is happening, a physical assessment, an explanation of what the assessment found, and a discussion of options and a plan. Treatment may occur on the day where it is appropriate and you have consented to it.
What to expect, step by step

We talk through what is happening
How it started, what makes it worse, what you have already tried, and what you actually need to get back to. This part is longer than you might expect, and it is where most of the useful information comes from.

Dr Corey assesses you
Movement testing, joint and muscle testing, and the specific orthopaedic or neurological checks your presentation calls for. You will be asked to move, and you may want comfortable clothing for that.

You get an explanation
What the assessment found, what it likely means, and what usually happens with it. In plain language, with the reasoning shown. Ask as many questions as you like.

We agree on a plan
Options discussed, a plan agreed, and a short list of things to do between visits. Treatment may happen on the day where it is appropriate and you have consented to it.
What to bring
- Comfortable clothing you can move in
- Any relevant scans or imaging reports you already have
- A referral letter, if you have one (not required to book)
- A list of current medications, if any could be clinically relevant
- Your private health fund card, if you intend to claim
None of these are essential. Come as you are if it is easier — the appointment works either way.

Using private health, Medicare or another pathway?
Most people swipe a health fund card and pay the gap. If one of these applies to you, a couple of them need paperwork sorted before your first appointment.

Do I need a referral?
No. Chiropractors are primary contact practitioners in Australia, so you can book directly without seeing your GP first.
A referral is only required for particular funding pathways — a Chronic Disease Management plan through your GP, a workers compensation claim, or a Department of Veterans’ Affairs arrangement. If any of those apply, get in touch before booking so the right process is followed.

Something you can move in comfortably. Assessment involves moving through range, so activewear or loose clothing works better than work attire.
Will I be treated on the first visit?
Often, but not always. Treatment on the day depends on what the assessment shows and on your consent. If something in the findings warrants imaging or a referral first, that is what happens instead.
Can I claim on private health insurance?
Most Australian private health funds cover chiropractic under extras cover. The rebate depends on your fund and level of cover. Contact the clinic to confirm on-the-spot claiming before your visit.
Is chiropractic covered by Medicare?
Chiropractic is not generally covered by Medicare. Limited rebates may be available under a Chronic Disease Management plan arranged by your GP, which requires a referral and has annual limits.
Can I bring someone with me?
Yes, and you are welcome to. A parent or guardian stays in the room for anyone under 18.
